How to Send Large Files Free — Up to 5 GB, No Account Needed to Send
By DocFila Team · May 3, 2026 · 5 min read
Email attachment limits are small, and a 1 GB video or a 500-page scan does not fit. DocFila has three ways to send a large file, and they behave differently, so this guide says which is which: DocTransfer for a download link, Drop for a short-lived encrypted link or QR code, and DocDrop nearby for a device on the same Wi-Fi network.
DocTransfer: a download link, up to 5 GB without an account
Go to transfer.docfila.com, add your files and share the link. You can send up to 5 GB without an account, and the recipient does not need one either. Without an account the link stays valid for up to 7 days; signing in raises the size limits and the expiry. You can add a password and see when the file was downloaded. DocTransfer keeps the file in DocFila's cloud storage (Google Cloud), encrypted at rest. It is not end-to-end encrypted.
Drop: an encrypted link or QR code that lasts 15 minutes
Drop encrypts each file with AES-256-GCM on your device before it is uploaded, and the recipient's browser decrypts it. The key travels in the QR code or in the part of the link after the # sign. Files are stored as ciphertext and deleted when the 15-minute session ends. The manifest, which lists file names and sizes, is not encrypted. When a device joins the session it sends the key to DocFila's server, which compares its hash with the one stored, so Drop is encrypted but not end-to-end. The size limit depends on your plan.
DocDrop nearby: device to device on the same network
DocDrop sends files directly between two devices on the same local network, such as the same Wi-Fi router, with no bytes going through DocFila's servers. It also works on a network with no internet connection. The files are encrypted between the two devices with AES-256-GCM; pairing with a QR code authenticates the other device, and without it you should compare the displayed code before sending. A transfer can hold up to 2 GB and 500 files.
Which one to use
- The recipient is anywhere and you want a normal download link: DocTransfer.
- The file is sensitive and the recipient can pick it up in the next 15 minutes: Drop.
- You are in the same room or office: DocDrop nearby.
When to use a normal cloud share instead
If the recipient won't pick up the file before the link expires, or you need a permanent copy, upload to Drive / Dropbox and share a link. DocFila exports straight to either.
Combine with PDF compression
To save bandwidth, compress large PDFs first.
