How to Compress a PDF for Free
By DocFila Team · April 14, 2026 · 6 min read
Email rejected your 38 MB PDF? Government portal capping uploads at 5 MB? Compressing a PDF is often the quickest way around an upload limit. This guide explains how PDF compression works, what DocFila's compress tool does, and what it cannot do.
How PDF compression works
PDFs are usually heavy because of three things: high-resolution images, embedded fonts, and uncompressed text streams. A good compressor downsamples images to a sensible DPI for screen viewing, deduplicates fonts, and re-encodes streams using modern algorithms. The result: smaller files that still look identical when read.
Compress a PDF in DocFila
Open DocFila and tap PDF Tools → Compress PDF. Choose your PDF and set the compression slider: lower means a smaller file with softer images. Tap Compress. Compression runs on your device. A PDF that already contains real text is mainly re-saved with stronger compression and may shrink only a little. An image-only scan is rebuilt from lower-resolution page images, which shrinks it more but removes any OCR text layer, so run OCR again if you need to search it.
Choosing the compression setting
Start at the default and check the result. A higher setting keeps more image detail and gives a larger file; a lower setting gives a smaller file with softer images. If the PDF will only be read on screen or sent by email, a lower setting is usually fine. If it will be printed or contains photographic detail you cannot lose, keep it high.
Make scanned PDFs smaller without losing legibility
Scans are usually the heaviest PDFs because each page is a high-resolution image. In the DocFila scan editor, applying the black-and-white filter before you save usually makes the file smaller, because the pages hold less colour information. Compress afterwards if it is still too large, and check that small text is still readable.
Bypass email size limits the smart way
If your file is still too big after compression, split it into chunks with the PDF split tool or use DocTransfer to send files up to 5 GB with a link that expires, without an account.
