How to Measure an Object With Your Phone Camera
By DocFila Team · May 3, 2026 · 5 min read
Forgot the tape measure? DocFila's Measure tool can estimate the straight-line distance between two points on an object, using a reference object of known size in the same picture. It is a quick check, not a replacement for a tape measure when an error would be costly.
Measure with the camera view
Open DocFila → Tools → Measure on your phone and point the camera at the object. Put a reference object of known size — a credit card, an A4 or US Letter sheet, or a US quarter — beside it, in the same plane, and tap its two ends to calibrate. Until you calibrate, no length is shown. Then tap the two ends of the thing you want to measure.
Measure from a photo
Photo Measure works on a photo from your gallery. Open the photo, mark the reference object, then mark the object you want to measure. The scale comes from the reference, so it only holds for objects in the same plane and at about the same distance.
Tips for a better measurement
Hold the phone square to the object rather than at an angle. Mark the ends precisely, zooming in if you need to. Keep the reference and the object flat on the same surface. Turning the phone ends the calibration, so recalibrate if you move. Avoid reflective or glass surfaces.
What it cannot do
Measure does not use augmented reality or LiDAR, and it does not make floor plans or room dimensions, or calculate areas, volumes or heights. It measures straight distances between points you mark, and DocFila does not state an accuracy. For anything where an error is costly, use a tape measure.
