Healthcare Document Signing and What HIPAA Requires

What HIPAA asks of an e-signature workflow, and what to settle before using DocFila with patient data.

HIPAA + e-signatures

HIPAA does not prohibit electronic signatures — it just requires safeguards. Your e-signature workflow must control access, log who saw and signed each document, and prevent tampering.

DocFila encrypts documents at rest and in transit (AES-256 and TLS) and keeps a tamper-evident audit trail of who viewed and signed each document. DocFila does not currently sign Business Associate Agreements and does not claim HIPAA compliance: do not upload protected health information until a BAA and a review of your workload are in place.

Common healthcare templates

DocFila does not ship patient-intake, telehealth-consent, notice-of-privacy-practices, advance-directive or surgical-consent templates. You can upload your own forms as PDFs and send them for signature.

Where the audit trail matters

For controlled-substance prescription paperwork, surgical consent, and any document that may be subpoenaed, the hash-chained audit trail records who opened the document, when, and from where — and the SHA-256 fingerprint shows whether the file has changed since it was signed.
